Cheap Interior Design That Looks Expensive
If you’re on a tight budget, but don’t want your home to look like you’re on a tight budget, there are a few things you can do to make your home look like you spent a fortune on interior design. Most interior design experts agree that f you have one expensive piece, showcase it, and use the cheap decorations to support that piece. But if you don’t, these five tips will help you make your house look like a mini-estate.
Rugs are a Must
Typically only true enthusiasts can tell the difference between and authentic Oriental rug and a less-expensive imitation. Use rugs in a room to protect your floors and give the room a chic, expensive look. Your best bet is to look in upscale home design magazines, and find rugs that imitate them.
Dress Up Your Blinds
An appropriate coat of paint on cheap blinds with window dressings such as drapes that provide a nice contrast to the blinds will help make the blinds look expensive from a glance. Choose a paint for the blinds that is appropriate for the blind material, and is in slight contrast to your walls – select neutral tones and nothing too flashy or they’ll come off as gaudy. For the drapes, choose a contrasting color that is subtle, and use window treatments to frame it.
Dress Up a Thrift Store Lamp
Lamps and lighting can make an interior look inviting. Antique lamps at a thrift store can be polished and dressed up with a little lace or rhinestone work for a whole new look. Again, scour upscale home design magazines for lamps, and then imitate accordingly. Train your eye to match up details as best as you can.
Slip Covers and Upholstery
If your couches and chairs are looking drab, dress them up with some of those designs you’ve been studying. Take a DIY course in reupholstering furniture (in other words, go to the bookstore or library or look it up online), and tackle a project with the fabrics you find most appealing and affordable. If you have a bamboo or wicker chair that’s looking saggy, give it a good re-caning – there are also DIY crash courses on that, too.
Use White Liberally
White walls, white trim, and white decoration pieces can liven up a place, make it look bigger, and open the eye to the room. It’s a perfect color for small rooms that need to be opened up. If you’re lucky enough to have some expensive tables, decorate them with some white pieces. They attract the eye to the expensive piece of furniture, and, once that is seen, the viewer typically assumes everything else is expensive, as well.
